Understanding the Different Types of Massage Therapy

Author: Dennis Frank

Believe it or not, there are actually more than 80 types of massage therapy out there. A variety of them are actually used in the massage industry in America today. Some of the more popular options happen to include deep tissues massage, sports massage, Swedish massage, reflexology, chair massage, acupressure, and there are many others out there as well. Many people have heard of these names but they really don't understand much about the various massage options and what they are all about. Here is a closer look at some of these various kinds of massage therapy.

One of the many types of massage therapy is known as acupressure massage therapy. This type of massage comes from ancient Chinese medicine. Not only is it used on humans today, but it is used for equine and even canine massage too. Meridian therapy is the guide to this massage and leads to important points on the body being depressed. This helps to relive blockages as well as tension within the body, allowing the flow of energy to get back to normal. It is believed that this therapy will help with natural healing and with restoring the natural balance within the body.

Reflexology is another one of the many types of massage therapy out there. It comes from Oriental medicine as well. There are special areas on the soles of the feet that are connected to various systems and organs within the body. By putting pressure on these different zones, the systems and organs can be stimulated and it can provide healing. Although it is usually done on the feet, reflexology can also be done to the body, hands, and even the face.

Sports massage is great for athletes and is another of the types of massage therapy often encountered today. It is used to help prevent injuries from happening and also is used to keep up good health. Not only does it use some techniques from Swedish massage, but it uses some techniques from a variety of different touch therapies. Some of them include hydrotherapy, compression, pressure points, and even cross fiber therapy. This type of therapy is also used on animals in some cases.

Another type of therapy is known as deep tissues massage. It is a foundational therapy and most of the schools teaching massage therapy actually teach this method of massage. It works deeply on the muscles, working the muscles and other connective tissues to get rid of tension and pain alike. Many people who have injuries have found that this massage technique provides a lot of help. In some cases clients may experience some soreness after having this done, but in the end it has positive results.

When it comes to various types of massage therapy, one of the most popular is chair massage. This is also known as seated massage by some people. It is often provided in malls, at corporate events, and even in airports as well. This type of massage is done while the person is in a chair, seated, and upright. It is usually relaxing and very enjoyable for the client.

The Most Popular Types of Massage Therapy

Author: Sarah Labdar

There are over 100 different types of massage practiced in today's society. Each one uses different techniques, strokes and instruments throughout the massage to accomplish the ultimate goal of healing. For each different type of massage there is a specific training, hands on hours and state licensing test before the masseurs are able to practice their craft. The different massage techniques are similar in their philosophy that massage therapy is the manipulation of muscles, ligaments, tendons, skin, fascia, and joints of the body.

Although every massage therapy session has a specific goal related to each individual patient, the benefits of massage therapy are widespread.  The benefits of massage therapy are not only physical but mental and spiritual as well. Massage therapy is a relaxing experience that can raise your spirits and brighten your day. Massage therapy boosts the immune system, relaxes the muscles, reduces anxiety, alleviates pain, reduces blood pressure and heart rate, increases endorphins, improves circulation, and increases range of motion. Every technique has a different level of intensity depending upon the depth of tissue that is being manipulated. Not everyone likes the same intensity and therefore different types of massages will be necessary for different patients.

Depending upon the type of medical office, spa, or clinic setting will determine what types of massage therapy is offered. In chiropractic offices therapeutic massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage are the most commonly offered massages because the patients are there to reduce pain, recover from injury and eliminate disease. A spa or salon type setting would more likely offer Swedish massage, relaxation or hot stone massages because the clientele is looking for more of a relaxing, and stress free environment.

Here is a list of the most popular massage therapy types used all over the world today. Other massages not listed here include Shiatsu, Craniosacral therapy, pregnancy massage, infant massage, Sports massage, Acupressure, Ayurvedic massage, Manual lymphatic drainage, Reiki massage, Rolfing, and many, many more.

Swedish Massage

When most people think of massage they are thinking about Swedish massage. It is the most common type of massage therapy and includes the basic strokes required for all massage. The four main strokes used during a Swedish massage are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement and vibration.  Most Swedish massages start with superficial strokes in the direction of the blood circulation to warm up the muscles then move to deeper tissues. The overall goals of Swedish massage include relaxation, muscle health, and the removal of toxins from the body through circulation.

Aromatherapy Massage

This massage is mainly used for relaxation or stress reduction. The difference is that Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils to relax, energize, balance, or reduce stress. One of the most common essential oil used with this type of massage is lavender, however the masseur will determine which types of essential oils to use based upon the patients medical conditions. Normally at the end of a session the unused oil is given to the patient to take home.

Hot Stone Massage

This massage is Swedish massage combined with the use of heated basalt lava massage stones. Hot stones are placed along meridians to loosen tight muscles for approximately 20 minutes. Then the massage therapist applies gentle pressure to the stones and uses the stones to massage the body. Hot stone massage relieves muscular tension and reduces stress.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is targeted toward the deeper muscles and connective tissues to break up adhesions, decrease pain from injury, repetitive strain and postural problems. Deep tissue massage usually includes slow strokes and friction as well as techniques such as trigger point, neuromuscular and myofascial release. Deep tissue massages are normally used in a medical or athletic setting. Deep tissue massage implies a deeper intensity than normal massage and can leave the patient sore for a couple of days. This is normal to remove toxins, increase range of motion and eliminate muscle tightness.

Therapeutic Massage

This is the type of massage that you would normally receive at a medical office such as a chiropractor, pain clinic or rehab facility. Therapeutic massage is typically used for people with chronic pain. The massage therapist focuses on correcting a problem that is causing the patient pain. Therapeutic massage can be used to treat various types of musculoskeletal disorders and conditions. Several different types of techniques can be used to accomplish this task.

Reflexology

Although commonly known as a foot massage, reflexology is based upon the theory of zone therapy. This means that parts of the body correspond to areas on the foot. This also includes the ears and hands as well as the feet. A reflexologists applies pressure to different parts of foot to relieve corresponding problems within the rest of the body. Although the pressure is firm, reflexology is very relaxing and people normally feel great after treatment.

Thai Massage

Thai massage is much like shiatsu massage in that it uses gentle pressure along the meridians of the body to balance the system. However, Thai massage is different in that it combines acupressure with yoga stretches.  Thai massage is based on Ayurvedic principles of unblocking energy pathways in the body through compression and stretching.  The therapist moves the patient's body through specific stretches to loosen and relax tight muscles.

Tips on Choosing Type of Massage

Author: Peter Boentinkton

Massage is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being. There are over eighty different recognized massage modalities, but the main reasons for introducing massage as therapy have are client demand and perceived clinical effectiveness

The various types of massage you pick depend on its application and intended use and the effect you want it to have on your body. Once you know these things, you can choose a type of massage that best meets your needs.

Shiatsu massage is a form of Japanese massage which is often used for relaxation. This type of massage consists of applying pressure to the 12 body meridians which are linked to certain organs in the body. Along the inner side of the arms and legs and on the chest and abdomen is Yein meridians, and along the outer side of the arms and legs and on areas of the head, face and buttocks are Yang meridians.

Deep tissue massage is right for you when you need a stronger, more intense treatment. Deep-tissue massage is good for long-term problems involving tight or painful muscles, including injury recovery. Deep tissue massage works on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue and uses slow strokes and friction across the muscles.

Swedish massage is most common type is most often just called massage therapy. The masseur uses lotion or oil to massage your upper layers of muscle in long smooth strokes. Kneading, and circular movements. It is gentle and relaxing. This type of massage is recommended if you've never had a massage before.

Sports massage isn't for relaxing but for preventing and treating injuries and improving physical performance. This type is right for you if you're an athlete or otherwise physically active.

Aromatherapy massages are primarily slow, gentle, rhythmic movements – effleurage. This massage helps muscles melt into deep relaxation, relieves water retention, de-stresses the body, mind and spirit; trigger the limbic system the part of the brain that seems to be linked with emotion. The masseur may select oils to help your body relax, re-energize, reduce stress or restore balance, or he may have you smell the oils to choose what you like. Lavender is a common essential oil for massage.

Hot stone massage is right for you if you prefer a lighter massage to ease your muscle tension. The masseuse may hold hot stones and use them to massage the body gently. Or she may place heated, smooth stones at certain points on the body to loosen tight muscles.

Different Type of Massage oil

Author: Tim Bodycare

As you know,  there are many ifferent types of massage oil you can use for face or body massage. We will lay out the different  standard types of massage oil and so help you decide which is the one for you.

Most widely used massage oils are: almond, olive, grapeseed, wheatgerm, avocado, evening primrose and rosehip. Those massage oil has its own benefits but some have specific contraindications and so should not be used based on certain people.

Type of  massage oil:
1)Avocado is very rich massage oil, and so is best-suited to a more mature skin or a very dry skin. It should not be used on someone who suffers from acne, as it is too rich for their skin.
2)Olive oil -Is nutritious for the skin; however it is a very thick oil and can be quite sticky to use. Like it is unlikely to cause any allergic reaction and so is good for babies (even newborns), and of course it has the advantage of being one of the cheapest massage oils – just use the bottle you already have on your kitchen shelf!

3)Grapeseed oil - it has a lighter consistency and is very unlikely to cause any skin reactions or allergies, which means it is a very good choice for massaging babies. Grapeseed, along with almond, is the most common type of massage oil and the ones most likely likely to be offered to you if you ask for "massage oil" in a shop.

4)Almond oil -  it has a medium consistency and therefore provides good ‘slip', but it should not be used if there is a history of any nut or seed allergies

5)Wheatgerm oil -It have a lot of vitamin E, and is an excellent massage oil to use on sun-damaged skin, as it can help to repair the sun damage and improve the condition of the skin.

6)Rosehip oil -it is excellent for repairing sun-damage and is also good for skin that shows scarring, especially acne scarring. It is however one of the more expensive oils.

Tips:
When eening primrose is full of phytoestrogens and it a great massage oil for menopausal women. On the other hand it should not be used on any woman who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant, as the high hormonal content could have a negative effect.

So as you can see, the best massage oil to use varies with the situation. If you are just starting out and would like to just buy one base massage oil to start with, then grapeseed is your best bet as it is one of the lighest oils, has a very low allergy rating, and is also an excellent base for essential oils.

The differences in types of massage parlours in Pattaya

Author: Bangkok Missy

Of the countless massage parlours within Pattaya, they all basically fall into two categories either traditional Thai massage or for a better word just plain sleaze. In fact it is really five different types, being Thai traditional all over body massage, foot and leg, face, sleaze or soapy massage.

Soapy massage as the name discribes is the same as sleaze but involving you in a good scrub down at same time, the choice is yours. Which ever you might want to try, it will sure to be an unforgettable experience that is guaranteed. So for those that have never been to Pattaya before, or tried any form of massage let me explain how to differentiate what services are on offer.

Better to have an idea before hand how these establishments work, this will avoid misunderstandings, perhaps frustration, or acute embarrassment for yourself or masseuse.Thai's take personal hygiene very seriously, so if you have had a hard day walking  the streets of Pattaya in the soaring heat, you would be well advised to request a quick shower before a massage. In any case you will shower after anyway, with the exception of course if just face, or foot and leg type of massage.

Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional massage has been well practised for centuries in Thailand and the practitioners have become very accomplished in many cases years of training are involved. Generally traditional Thai massage is to be found in higher class hotels and in pleasant surroundings.  jointly with a spa treatment as well if required.

On entering you will be expected to leave your shoes outside this is Thai tradition. The ladies will be well turned out and will be dressed in a similar manner. Perhaps even in Thai traditional dress this being for the sole benefit of tourists to create ambiance to the proceedings.

This also applies to establishments outside the hotel environment. As a general rule of thumb if the massage parlour appears up market in its look. and the girls dress formally then this establishment is traditional massage only. With traditional massage there should be no sexual contact and none will be expected or given. Any apparent signs of sexual excitement will be discreetly ignored.

The massage is purely therapeutic and has good benefits for back pain and circulation problems. But be prepared to be pulled around and joints manipulated with clicking of joint bones expect little sensual gentle massage. On entering after exchange of pleasantries you will be escorted and left to shower. After you have freshened up you will be provided with perhaps a dressing gown or towel and taken to a massage couch, You lay face down a towel across your lower torso, depending what treatment you want cream or oil massage will commence.

Sessions are typical by the the hour.traditional massage is is enjoyed by both male and female of all ages. Costs are generally higher within the hotel, if you become a regular of outside massage parlours, private hotel room visits can sometimes be arranged.

Foot massage

Foot massage is well practised in Pattaya, on entering as with all massage parlours leave your shoes outside. You will be seated in a comfy chair and a pouffe to rest your feet on. Your feet are washed and bathed after careful and methodical washing cream will be applied.

The session will start leg, feet massage and manipulation of pressure points is very beneficial in circulation problems, good for kidneys and other parts of the body. It is thought different areas of the feet have effects on different parts of the body. Charges are modest and are in the region of 200 baht.

Nearer the completion of treatment your feet will be bound in hot towels you will be allowed to close your eyes and relax. Charges are modest and are in the region of 200 baht. It is easy to spot foot massage parlours as you can see other clients having treatment through the large shop window display.

Face massage

These can be found within Pattaya at the Festival Centre Shopping Mall, as well as a face massage which is good for skin tone other treatments such as deep cleaning of the skin are available. All within an ultra modern setting using best products and equipment.

Sleaze massage

To make the distinction on this type of massage I have called it sleaze. Although it is under the guise of traditional massage, this is just a front to what will happen in this type of massage parlour. Recognizable by the girls outside, they will dress in a provocative manner and will be more pushy and overly friendly. From the outset everyone knows the purpose of your visit and it is not just for massage. The idea is for you to make small chat and decide who you would like to carry out your personal massage.

Care must be taken that the lady you choose will be in fact the one that carries out the massage, as sometimes the prettiest girls are just there to lure you inside. This avoids disappointment later when the replacement is not of your liking. In such a parlour again shower, you will be taken to an air-conditioned cubicle consisting of a pull close curtain and a massage couch, in more down market places just a mattress on the floor.

You will be left for a few moments and expected on the mousses return to be laying face down and if you are modest a towel across your rear. These places are very quite and every word is carried out in whispers to avoid others in adjoining cubicles overhearing. Choices of oil or cream is the norm, oil being the most favourite the basic charge starts at 200 baht for an hour. Lots of this type of massage parlour can be found in soi 11 Pattaya where many are situated.

Teams of girls work these massage parlours and the establishments are open all day until very late and in some cases into the early hours. The massage will be sensual with hands becoming more intimate around your body, occasional and of course accidentally touching intimate parts of the body.

Without going into too much graphic detail mid way through the massage you will be asked to turn over onto your back, at this point you will be fully naked. Assuming nature has taken its course, you will be asked if extras are required, after whispered, hurried negotiation a price is agreed ususually about 500 to 1000 baht, depending what is required.

Soapy massage

This type of massage is not as easy to find but the very large ones offer this service, here you choose the lady or ladies you like that sit behind a large glass plated window. Perhaps enjoying a drink in the usually affluent surroundings. The lady or ladies leaves her position and awaits you in an allocated room. You are pampered and washed from head to toe, in a tub again with accidental contact with parts of your anatomy under water the rest is " up to you "

In addition to various parts of the body, massage can be performed with the aid of mechanical aids, oils and lotions. It is one of the oldest and simplest forms of promoting good health. There are over eighty different types of massage. Let us review some of the more common types of body massage.

Swedish Massage

During a gentle and relaxing Swedish massage, the therapist applies massage oil to the body and uses kneading, circular movements in combination with long, smooth strokes. There are six basic strokes: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, compression and vibration. Superficial layers of muscle are targeted.

Sports Massage

Athletes and people who work out regularly can benefit from a sports massage. The aim is to loosen muscles and increase flexibility so that athletic performance is enhanced and injuries are prevented or avoided. Therapists use facilitated stretching techniques in combination with more rapid strokes compared with a Swedish massage.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage therapy is performed with the aid of essential oils. Essential oils are scented plant oils and each essential oil is thought to have different effects on the body. For example, rosemary oil is cleansing and energising, chamomile, lavender and geranium are calming and rose, neroli and ylang ylang are uplifting. The theory is that essential oils are both inhaled and absorbed through the skin and have effects on blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion and stress levels. For this reason, aromatherapy massages are particularly useful for treating emotional problems and stress-related conditions.

Hot Stone Massage

During a hot stone massage, heated smooth stones made of basalt are placed on certain points on the body, including the back, the palms of the hands or in between the toes. The therapist may also apply pressure to the stones. The aim is to warm and thereby loosen tight muscles and also to improve the circulation. This lighter form of massage is particularly suited to people suffering from muscle tension.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese massage which involves the use of rhythmic finger and palm pressure to acupuncture meridians. The aim is to improve the flow of energy around the body and thereby restore the body to a balanced state. Benefits include improved circulation, reduced muscular stiffness and reduced stress levels.
Touch has been shown to bring numerous health benefits to people with a variety of conditions ranging from a variety of chronic disorders, injuries and stress-related conditions. It may be worth taking some time to find the type of body massage that is best suited to your needs, if only to help you relax at the end of a long day.

Massage: the Five Most Common Types of Massage

Author: Pasquale Bright

Have you ever wanted to go for a massage therapy session but didn't know what type of massage to get? Massage therapy is a very diverse field of work and there are many types of massage to choose from that range from full-body stress relief to highly targeted methods that relieve muscular pain and dysfunction. Five of the most popular types of massage are Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Hot Stone Massage, Sports Massage, and Neuromuscular Therapy.

1. Swedish Massage - this is the most common type of massage in the United States and perhaps the world. Swedish massage is known for its long gliding strokes, kneading strokes, friction strokes, and percussion as well as joint movements that feel great while improving range of motion. It's most often thought of as a "spa" type of massage but it's much more than that. Swedish massage is great for reducing stress, improving circulation, improving range of motion of your joints, and helping you actually feel better in your own skin. Swedish massage can range from light pressure to a heavier pressure depending on your comfort level. It's more than just a "feel good" massage it is very therapeutic.

2. Deep Tissue Massage - right behind Swedish massage in popularity and availability, Deep Tissue Massage is one of the best known and most often requested types of massage. This massage shares some strokes and techniques with Swedish massage and is used to root out chronic tension in the deeper musculature and connective tissues that contribute to pain and loss of range of motion in joints. While some massage therapy practitioners use a heavier, sometimes uncomfortable pressure in Deep Tissue Massage it should be noted that a more moderate pressure can reach deep tissues and achieve great results with little discomfort.

3. Hot Stone Massage - this type of massage is probably the most relaxing and luxurious massage being given today. Heated basalt stones are added to the massage and are used by the massage therapist to perform a mini heat treatment as well as gliding massage strokes that seem to melt away stress and tension.

4. Sports Massage - just like it sounds, Sports Massage is geared toward athletes at every level from professional to the "weekend warrior" and those who strive for a higher level of fitness. Rather than a specific form of massage, Sports Massage is generally a combination of massage techniques tailored to the athlete's needs. The Sports Massage might be applied to one area to relieve pain or might be more general in nature to assure overall performance.

5. Neuromuscular Therapy - also called "NMT" or Neuromuscular Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy is a well known massage technique for relieving muscular pain, and muscle spasm throughout the body. Neuromuscular Therapy is effective with myofascial trigger points causing "referred" pain that originates from someplace other than where it's felt. This technique uses very targeted compression and friction massage techniques, positioning, and stretching to release the myofascial trigger points in muscles as well as restrictions in tendons, muscular attachments, and sometimes fascia surrounding the muscle.

All of the massage techniques described here can help you receive the health benefits of massage. Of course there are many more massage therapy techniques available that are relaxing, stress reducing, and that relieve chronic tension and pain. You actually don't have to know what type of massage to ask for, you just need to know what you want to achieve. Do you just want to relax? Reduce muscle soreness? Relieve pain? Improve posture? Ask your massage therapist what they recommend for your particular health needs and get massaged today.

Differnet Types Of Massage - Which Do You Need?

Author: Jonathan Hook

You may be surprised to discover just how many different forms, types and variations of massage there are. When you have a session with a professional massage therapist you won't necessarily receive the same massage technique as the next client. Massage therapists train in different types of massages and use their expertise to determine which massage style will be best for you. Some of the most common massage techniques include:

Swedish Massage- undoubtedly the most common form of massage. Swedish massage is known for its ability to bring the body into a state of relaxation and is often the first massage technique that therapists learn. Swedish Massage does not involve deep tissue or layers but is reserved to the upper most layers of the skin and muscle.

Sports Massage- this massage is used to treat the injuries that are often associated with various athletes due to the sports they participate in. This type of massage is also effective in preventing sports related injuries as well as treating them. One of the best benefits of Sports Massage is found in the fact that muscles and ligaments may be stretched and lengthened during these sessions. This results in enhanced athletic performance.

Deep Tissue Massage- this type of massage is performed more deeply upon the muscle and tissue compared to other types. Due to the nature of this massage, it is very beneficial in treating various types of chronic pain. It is important to realize that due to the amount of friction used in this type of massage, patients may experience a slight degree of discomfort following the treatment.

Reflexology- many people refer to Reflexology as a foot massage, however it is more involved than simply massaging the feet. Reflexology is based upon the Acupressure points that reside in the foot. The belief is that stimulation and massage on these points will connect with various points throughout the body.

Thai Massage- sometimes referred to as Thai Yoga Massage, this form of massage combines many of the stretching poses of yoga with deep, vigorous massage techniques.

Shiatsu- otherwise known as Japanese Massage, Shiatsu uses the same pressure points in Chinese Acupressure and Acupuncture to perform deep tissue bodywork.

Hot Stone Massage- this type of massage uses hot or heated stones that are placed on certain points in the body. The heat from the stones relaxes tight and tense muscles and is believed to bring balance to the body.

Pregnancy or Prenatal Massage- this massage is used to help promote circulation, relaxation, and reduce stress in expectant mothers.
